Many sites around the internet have gone dark today today in protest against two proposed pieces of legislature making it’s way through Congress and The House of Representatives right now. The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) threaten to shut down the internet as we know it. These two pieces of legislature are so broad in their language that they effectively give big corporations sweeping power to shut down any site they deem is violating on their property. Essentially, big corporations and the government would be able to censor the internet.
These two acts threaten the way that we can bring you news and reviews and they way that you use the internet. Even though LA Otaku isn’t going dark today in protest, we still strongly oppose SOPA and PIPA. If passed, they would essentially shut down blogging sites like us. No one would be able to post to YouTube, Facebook, of WordPress. The White House has gone on record opposing the proposed acts and SOPA has temporarily been shelved until it can be updated and pushed once again. Learn more about SOPA and PIPA and it’s effects on the internet and let your representatives know you oppose them.
